My biggest concern for the future is...........
Lately, I came across this line in the recently penned down book of one of my favourite authors Dan Brown. His book- Origin revolved around this statement- 'Where do we come from?Where are we going?' Albeit the answer to this was related to history and science, but this 32 letter string of words left a deep impact on my psyche.
In this cosmic we all have been sent with a resolve to fulfill our aspirations, to achieve our dreams, be proudly ambitious and fiercely independent in our approach to life as well as our goals. However, the unfortunate fact is that- We, as millennials are losing our identity. We are caught in the trappings of tradition, goals, infatuation and in a transition period fraught with the process to find our own identity. I understand many of us find it difficult to come to terms with our fears which are dictated by the society. The prominent one being- Who says what?
Our tender mind which at this age ideally should be resonating with efficacious ideas is buzzing with the above sentence and other identical questions which are of least importance in our priority lists. There is no authenticity in the ideas produced by us. We aren't able to draw a distinction between the right and the wrong. These days I can witness a climate of change that has swayed the minds of young people, who are expected to lead the world with their resplendent, innovative ideas. But, on the contrary these days all I can see is boys and girls having an inclination towards each other on the basis of 'shape of bodies' or 'good looks', or getting depressed over not having achieved our grail or perhaps bullying the weak and fragile just because they don't have a voice to speak up? The entire definition of love is dwindling. The complete connotation of climbing the ladders of success is actually staring down the abyss. And if this is the pace and attitude with which we are marching forward, then we have only ourselves to blame for a materialistic and fake world that we are creating.
Instead of the restless energy that must unleash inside us, I can see a raging hopelessness that has dawned over us. 'I can't do', 'I am not fit for this' , 'This is difficult' and many such indistinguishable sentences are reverberating in our ears. If this continues to happen then there will be no end to the surging number of Indians suffering from depression or anxiety disorders. In a WHO report published exactly a year back, it stated 4.5% of the Indian population suffered from this disease, which is an approximate 56 million. Cyber bullying has become extremely common. Gone are those days, when love blossomed on the basis of signals, eye contacts, love letters being written in schools and those silly talks in canteen. These have now become tell-tales for our parents to share with us at the dinner table. Again the term 'dinner table' brings to mind the lack of dialogue that we have with our parents.
Ultimately, all this boils down to one pertinent question that I raise my arm like Hermione Granger to answer- What kind of a world are we living in?
Unless we embrace ourselves the way we are. Unless we stop bowing down to failures so easily. Unless we start living life on our own terms, we all are leading ourselves into a disastrous world and there will be soon no distinction made between mankind and hell.
Thanks a ton for reading. These are words that I have pondered upon lately. Moreover, philosophy and such thoughts are not my forte, but I have tried to diversify my skills in the above piece. I would be mighty obliged if you share your views with me in the comment section about what is your biggest concern for the future.
